Nestled in the heart of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Loch Katrine is one of Scotland’s most enchanting places to visit. Famous for its crystal-clear waters, stunning mountain backdrops, and rich literary connections, this tranquil loch has been inspiring visitors for centuries.
Today, one of the best ways to experience its beauty is through the Cycle and Sail day out: a unique combination of a scenic cruise aboard the historic Sir Walter Scott Steamship and a bike ride along the loch’s peaceful shoreline with bikes from Katrine Wheelz.
This unforgettable adventure blends history, outdoor fun, and breathtaking scenery—making it the perfect activity for families, couples, or anyone looking for a memorable day in the Scottish Highlands.
Step Aboard the Sir Walter Scott Steamship celebrating 125 years of sailing.
Your journey begins at Trossachs Pier, where the elegant Sir Walter Scott Steamship awaits. This iconic vessel has been delighting visitors for well over a century. Named after Scotland’s great novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott—who immortalised Loch Katrine in his works—this steamship is more than just a boat; it’s a piece of living history.
As the ship glides across the loch, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of rolling hills, wooded shores, and the rugged peaks of Ben Venue and Ben A’an. The journey itself is tranquil, with the gentle hum of the vessel perfectly complementing the peaceful atmosphere of the loch. Along the way, you may spot local wildlife such as ospreys, red deer, or even golden eagles soaring overhead.
Cycling the Shores of Loch Katrine
After your relaxing sail, it’s time to swap deck for saddle. At Katrine Wheelz Bike Hire, located right by the pier, you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable ride. The friendly team offers a wide range of bicycles, including hybrid bikes, mountain bikes, electric bikes, and children’s options—making it easy for everyone to take part.
From Stronachlachar, you can cycle back towards Trossachs Pier, enjoying beautiful views at every turn. Along the way, you’ll pass tranquil bays, cascading burns, and viewpoints that are ideal for a picnic stop or a quick photo. The combination of fresh Highland air, spectacular scenery, and the freedom of cycling makes this one of the most rewarding rides in Scotland.
